Actually he should do! He is the 'Wellard' actors grandson... so Wellard is now a proud grandma of a budding animal actor!

The winter here in the UK seemed to have gone on for ever! Dogs got covered in mud or soaked every time they went out for exercise. Not to mention the dangers of frozen stretches of water in ponds and canals especially - let's hope it's soon completely over and we get a drier and better spring and summer which is more suited to outdoor pursuits, especially dog agility!

If you are experiencing difficulties when drying and cleaning your pup, then get your puppy used to being cleaned up after its walks by using a reward - it's easier if there are two of you - one holding treats, and the other doing the necessary cleaning.

Dog and Puppy Health Problems

Did you see the much publicised Pedigree Dogs Exposed [on UK TV] which has left most dog breeders and exhibitors incredulous and angry, and others feeling that it may have served as a timely reminder that there are issues that need addressing by the KC and breeders before it becomes too late?!

Then there was the Martin Clunes dog programme [in 2 parts] which was MOST interesting... and did touch on the same negative health problems occuring in pedigree dogs in the last programme. If you missed both programmes and own a pedigree dog do try and see if any of your friends taped the programmes. Most worrying!

The health problems appear to be getting worse and worse. Just looking at some breeds makes you worry - think of the poor Alsations, whose back ends and legs look all wrong, and from what was said on the programme it is being encouraged by the Kennel Club as the way they should be! But it causes untold problems later in life, and not that much later, either!

Arthritis, heart problems, heads too small for the brain, poor articulation, breathing problems, and so much more is being increasingly found within the pedigree dog breeds - in breeding is a major problem, as is breeding for required TYPE for showing. More worryingly, dogs with known problems are being made champions and are being bred from in large numbers - increasing the problem exponentially.

[If you are thinking of adopting new dog from rescue - a working dog, from working stock, a mixed breed, a Heinz 57, would all be perhaps better bets health wise - obviously if you are a fan of a particular breed, then it will be that particular rescue that you go, but do please be aware that the veterinarian costs for your new pet could be horrendous... maybe the previous owners knew of the health problem and that was their reason for the abandonment!

I do know of some unscrupulour cases of this phenomena. Your breed's Welfare Trust might be helpful in this respect if they can afford it - I know with our Trust they do fund vets fees for health checks firstly, and secondly try to fund vets fees for problems found in abandoned animals.]

The mental anguish, the vets costs, and the final outcome of this ticking time bomb is something perhaps best avoided.

It was horrific to hear how some of those poor animals suffered, and all in the name of 'best of breed'! I know of several people who couldn't bear to watch all of the programme - but it is best publicised, whilst hopefully, there is still time to at least partially reverse the harm being done to pedigree breeds.

EastEnders and Wellard

Do you watch EastEnders? [UK TV programme] You'll be happy to know that Kyte who played Wellard is alive and well, though she is getting on in years!

She is trained using treats, will do anything for food! She really played the part amazingly well from when she took the part over from her mother. Terence, also of EastEnders fame comes from the same 'stable'.

What really pleased me was that EastEnders undertook to highlight the danger to dogs from CHOCOLATE. If you are getting a new puppy before Christmas - please pay attention here!

The choclate treats you can buy for your pet in the petshop are totally different, and aren't dangerous, but chocolate which is meant for human consumption can have an extremely detrimental effect on the health of your pet and in some cases, kill.

Please keep it away from them... Christmas can be a very tempting time for your dog with chocolate decorations on the tree maybe and also presents [chocolates] under the tree on Christmas night. Make sure your dog is well away from these temptations.

I have heard plenty of complaints about the RSPB not allowing dogs on its reserves... but, I must admit though I do find it annoying myself, I can appreciate their stance when some people just won't keep their dogs on leads when specifically requested to do so, and some just won't clean up after their pets. This attitude makes it extremely difficult for responsible owners, and is so anti-social!

That said, I have found plenty of RSPB reserves which do allow dogs on leads to visit and have enjoyed visits to Dinas in Wales, which is not to be missed; and to various sites in Scotland with our dogs.

Have you enjoyed the Springwatch series on BBC TV these last four weeks? It is now, sadly, coming to an end with the last special scheduled for tonight I believe.

The RSPB states that it has had a good increase in memberships following the programme. You have an option to option to choose Bill Oddie's "How to Watch Wildlife" book as a free joining gift until the end of June. [If you already have a copy of it, why not put it aside as a gift for someone special.]

With summer just about to be upon us [hopefully!] in the Northern Hemisphere the following advice is at its most pertinent. As the warmer months are a prime time for pests such as fleas to spread - also watch out for ticks - it is a time to be vigilant and to check your pet regularly.

"It is very important that fleas are dealt with promptly, as they
can spread disease such as tapeworm, typhus and tularemia. Not only
that, but the itching can drive your poor dog crazy!...."

Hotch-potch of miscellaneous items

This post is rather a miscellaneous collection... a hotch-potch!

Crufts is long over and forgotten. Personally, I think the coverage this year was better than we have had for some time. The extra programme devoted to things other than best in breed, and show, was a real plus.

Flyball, agility, and dancing to music all had some good coverage on that programme... good to see. Mary Rae was a highlight for many once again.

British Summer Time [BST] is now with us, with it I hope for some better weather for all outdoor dog sports and training! What a laugh - we've had more snow since BST than in all the previous year in this area of the Midlands!

Health news for today is one of the many blogs by Dr Eddy... you'll find us within his list of Neighborhoods. There is a lot info on health issues and quite a few interesting dog blogs to be found there too.

Crufts is nearly with us... it is from 6th - 9th March and held at the NEC Birmingham, if you cannot visit in person you will find that it has coverage of an hour daily on the BBC... enjoy!

Crufts was officially 'launched' in London in readiness for its NEC show, and to highlight the way in which dogs and people nurture and look after each other, Pets as Therapy and five PAT dogs were joined by dog lover James Caan of Dragon's Den and director of Fit Fur Life, which promotes the rehabilitation and training of dogs.

Defenders and the Save Wolves Organisation sent out an email... a shortened version of which is quoted below...

"Things have gone from bad to worse for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies.

Today, the Bush/Cheney Administration is stripping these amazing animals of vital federal protections, officially opening the door to the shooting, trapping, and killing of up to 1,200 wolves.

Under existing state management plans -- plans approved by the Bush Administration -- all but 300 hundred wolves could be killed. That’s 80% of the wild wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies!

Federal officials have already made it easier to kill wolves while they were still protected under the Endangered Species Act. Now they’re taking the final step, and eliminating these federal protections altogether.

Idaho officials want to use aerial gunning to kill wolves in their state. Wyoming agencies have left the door open to the use of traps and poison to eliminate wolves. And officials in both states -- and Montana -- have proposed wolf hunts.

States could start the killing by the end of March.

More than a decade ago, caring wildlife supporters just like you helped Defenders lead the fight to return these majestic animals to Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies."

Christmas is such a busy time... new puppies take a lot of love and looking after, lots of time is needed... so Christmas and puppies are definitely not a good formula or mix.

Advice for first time bonfire night pups!

The 'season' or the celebrations for bonfire night seem to be spread over a longer and longer period each succeeding year in the UK!

So many poor puppies are terrified of the bangs, they hide, or they shiver and shake with fear, or both... I am hoping it will soon be finished with for their sakes.

If you have a fearful pet just try to reassure it, talk to it, and say positive things about the fireworks... as in 'isn't it pretty' in an upbeat voice! Some people say this works, worth a try!

We are so lucky in that our rescue dog seems to ignore them completely. Though one evening we were outside and some rockets went off and he just stood there with his head on one side and watched and seemed MOST interested. He just seemed to be admiring them!

You know how vulnerable your pets are when they come into contact with traffic - now please let me point you to a website which will make you think of the other animals who are in danger from the increasing amount of traffic on the roads.

The website I am going to point you towards is based in America, but the thought behind the email which I received from them applies equally to many, many countries.

Hop over to the Defenders Organization to check their 'Watch Out for Wildlife' posting. Large animals can be seriously injured or killed so please take care and slow down where signs are posted warning of animals.

Even if you don't care about the animals... your car, and maybe you, won't come off scot free!

In the UK there are a growing number of accidents involving deer, and they can be quite serious to the car, the occupants, and the poor deer who often appear from nowhere and dash out in front of anything.

Also please spare a thought for the hedgehogs during the spring, summer, and early autumn - and now there are increasing numbers of otters being killed on our roads.

If the only male in an area, or the only female for that matter, is killed the area will be without a breeding pair... please take care.

Have you visited our 'Doggy Blog Clips' recently? Why not click on the link in our left-hand margin?

One 'trick' you could learn about in the clips is teaching your puppy to cross its front paws. It does look really cute!

Whenever and wherever you walk your pup, you will find there are loads of interesting birds in city centres and parks, as well as in towns and the countryside - and the more you learn, the more interested you will be! Our previous dog was fascinated by birds and would stand and watch them.

Check out the RSPB website for details... and what about a gift membership for someone this Christmas? Would some young family member benefit from becoming a member of the YOC?

UK television viewers who watched 'Silent Witness' will have seen "Wellard" from Eastenders performing in the first episode of the two-part Silent Witness this week. She is a busy 'actor' [who'll do anything for certain foods], but, she is also a grandmother, and a qualified Agility Dog. And, in my opinion, looks very young for her age!

So add some extra strings to your Flyball dogs bow, whilst they are still young and active!"

Have you seen about the dog which was voted guide dog of the year... all the finalists were so worthy - but the one which won was the one which was so savagely attacked by a Rottweiller - yet Roz got her owner home safely afterwards.

It was subsequently touch and go whether her life could be saved at the vets, but thankfully all went well, and she slowly recovered, and is now back at work!

Not dogs, but whales - "In August 2007, less than a year after resuming a commercial whale hunt, Iceland announced that it would end the hunt. They listed low market demand and lack of access to the Japanese market for whale meat as reasons for the decision."

Puppy Training Secrets is just one of four 'doggy blogs' which I maintain.

Though you may be interested in just training your new puppy, or want to learn more about it, where to find help, or have arrived by mistake! ... all the blogs are, in reality, interrelated and can help you in your quest for knowledge.

All are about an interest you have in dogs, and are about the dogs themselves - and adding an extra interest for them in their lives.

First must come training at an early age - hence 'puppy training secrets'. Then remember, your pet must be well trained and obedient before taking on any other interests - hence 'secrets of dog training'.

After the initial training, which is best accomplished when your pet is interested, remember they have short interest spans when young... and tire easily... then you can go forward to other interests for both you and your pet... maybe agility or flyball, or you could take on obedience.

Both sports suit different dogs, see which your dog prefers... and remember if you go for agility... you will need to be quick too, and give good and consistent hand signals. Both you, and your pet, will make new friends here - and your pet will not suffer from boredom in the way many pets can, if not stimulated sufficiently.

The following quote is from a newsletter I received from the Humane Society of the United States... HSUS... on the subject of dogfighting.

"The outrage is unprecedented, and for good reason: Two days after a federal grand jury indicted NFL star quarterback Michael Vick and three cohorts on felony dogfighting charges, more than 150,000 people have called on the NFL to suspend Vick immediately."

Should the fact that someone is in the public eye, in a position of trust and where youngsters look up to them influence the way they are treated in a case like this? What messaage is this sending out to youngsters?

Cruelty is cruelty no matter who perpetrates it... though someone who influences [though maybe, it might be claimed, not by choice] the thoughts of the young generation, [it could be argued] should act in a far more responsible manner than an ordinary member of public who hasn't got the same degree of influence.

Protecting Cats and Dogs... The European Parliament has voted unanimously to ban cat and dog fur from being imported or exported into Europe. A new law in the Philippines will not only protect people and animals from deadly rabies, but also put an end to the dog meat trade and strengthen animal welfare standards.

Standing Up for Endangered Species... Representatives from 170 countries met to decide the fate of many of the world's wild species subject to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) - they agreed to a number of animal-friendly moves.

Socialization

It is extremely important to socialize your new pup, both to friends and family members as soon as possible... and with other dogs and pups as soon as allowed, after her or his innoculations are completed.

It is a delight to see pups watch older dogs carefully... taking in so much information which will help in their later development and socialization.

It's a surprising fact too that dogs will recognise their own breed [even though the particular animals have never before met] from a distance... and make a bee line for them... and in a way which is different to their approach to animals of another breed.

If you haven't experienced this first-hand before, make sure you are alert to their reactions when your pup meets 'one of its own'!

Missing Required Nutrients?

Once your puppy is old enough for 'grown-up' food, rather than special puppy strength feeds, do check out which is the best way to feed him or her.

Whether to use a complete food, or whether to go with home-made or other forms of feeding... if you are new to the breed or dogs in general, get advice from your breeder or vet. Also remember the problems which there have been recently with pet foods.

I am also copying below the post from 'Secrets of Dog Training' which deals with problems which are caused by lack of required nutrients...

"Has your pet taken to stealing food, eating unmentionables, or eating grass and other vegetation or berries when out?

The answer could be that their diet is lacking in an essential nutrient. This is even possible for dogs on 'complete' dry food diets - and the problem will build up over the years.

Choose the right breed of puppy - terrestial TV to your aid!

Terrestial TV in the UK has been good to dogs, and education and rescue, this year.

There has been coverage of Crufts. We have had the excellent show presented by Julian Clary... The Underdog Show.

Also there was a most interesting programme about a couple of 'problem' dogs. Two breeds were featured the Bearded Collie and a Bloodhound.

The dogs in question were 'problem' dogs - basically they were probably not suited to the lifestyle they were forced to live and could have been bored! This helps point out the vital importance of choosing the right breed for your lifestyle... see link at the bottom of this post.

Once these dogs were taken on by dog trainers who trained them for what the breed is naturally adapted to do... they not only became well behaved, but they also became interested and competent at their jobs. As a bloodhound, and a collie/sheepdog!

The next date for your diary is I believe 16th July when Matt Baker [of Blue Peter fame] and Selina Scott [triumphant in the Underdog Show with Chump] will start a new show which aims to help people find the ideal rescue dog [or puppy] for their particular lifestyle.

This all points out most clearly that whilst different lifestyles suit different people, so different breeds of dog need different lifestyles to suit their inbred needs!

Let's hope that terrestial TV can set up some brilliant partnerships - and that it will inform those who are looking to have a puppy, or re-home a dog, a little about the very different requirements of some of the various dog breeds.

Summer Hints and Tips

This collection of summer hints and tips is addressed particularly at those in the northern hemisphere who are about to experience summer.

Heat in the form of hot sunny days can be a source of pleasure and joyous outings with your puppy... but it can also be a breeding ground for pests and diseases, not to mention the problem of heat stroke.

Here I am not preaching about the heat in cars, though if you even fleetingly think of leaving your pet in the car for 5 minutes... I want you to try just one thing first... adjust the windows as you would for leaving your pet, park your car and just sit there, you won't believe how hot it will become in just a short period of time.

Now that you know for yourself how hot it becomes... please, please, please, start preaching about the problem to everyone you know - so that they too can start preaching the message.

Personally, already this year, I have had to report one instance of a dog being left in a car. Luckily the outcome was OK. Maybe someone else has learned this serious message.

Besides this, even out in the sun and doing everything 'according to the book' heat stroke can strike down even dogs in their prime - so be especially careful.

Also remember that disease spreads more rapidly in the heat, there is the problem of flies too... and fleas and ticks. And don't forget the dangers that rivers, ponds, and lakes pose to both pets and their owners who go in after them to save them.

On the other hand, take your cues from your puppy's behaviour... study him or her intently for a day, see what they do when they want to go!

The obvious thing to do is to take them outside and use your chosen 'word' after they have had a meal or a drink... and as soon as they perform use loads of praise and maybe a treat as well to reinforce the message!

Sorry, when you first get them home, they will probably need to go in the night too... if at all possible take them to your chosen place and use your chosen 'word'. Broken nights won't last too long!

And last, but probably MOST importantly, never get cross or punish them for any mishaps.

Young Kennel Club, (YKC)

Back in 1985 an organisation to encourage young people, from 6 to 24 years old, to learn more about training and caring for dogs was formed... it is now know as YKC [the Young Kennel Club].

Members have loads of activities to take part in, from small dog shows right up to huge events like Crufts in Birmingham or Discover Dogs in London. Also members can learn from experts such as vets and dog training instructors, which will enhance their experiences with their pets.

Another benefit of membership is that there are residential courses available with seminars and training. Members can enjoy, in a social atmosphere, learning about agility, obedience, flyball, handling, and heelwork to music [doggy dancing].

In the UK... Beware the power of your local Council!

If you live in the UK don't miss this!

New laws are being stealthily introduced by some of your local Councils. You NEED, as a dog owner, to know about this.

Go to this Kennel Club News Item now. On the resulting page you will find details of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 - which came into force on April 6th, 2007 - amongst a raft of detail remember this item. It states that you should provide your dog with 'the ability to exhibit normal behaviour patterns'.

Dogs like to run free, that's a normal behaviour pattern!

Next we come to the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 which gives an inordinate number of powers to your local Council. Some of the laws pertaining to cleaning up after your dog are only basic common sense, and every responsible dog owner cleans up anyway... but some powers, in regard to dogs being kept on leads, appear to flout the Animal Welfare Act.

Problems could be ahead!

Increasingly thieves target pedigree dogs... so whilst your puppy is young do get it micro-chipped for safety. Of course it could just get out and stray... either way micro-chipping is a vital resource and will help you and your puppy be reunited in the event of him or her becoming lost.

Another tip is to get your puppy to answer to its name and come to you when called. [Don't give out its name to strangers to be on the safe side.]

A brilliant, amusing, and useful website to visit is All about Dogs - don't miss it! This link takes you directly to a list of Dog Charities and Organisations both UK and International - in fact a very comprehensive list!

But, click on any of the other pages which take your fancy, and you'll find lots of doggy facts, plus amusing trivia.

Now a reminder for UK pet owners - that the PDSA PetCheck bus is touring the country in a bid to try to improve the health of the nation's pets.

Dogs are the main focus, but other popular pets are covered too. Dogs get a free health check which will cover general health - they check teeth, eyes, condition of coat, and weight.

Sadly, last year's PetCheck revealed that obesity in dogs had increased to over a fifth of the dogs checked, and dental problems had also increased dramatically.

As an International buyer I didn't expect delivery THAT quickly... but when I placed an order in the morning on Friday - I received the goods on the following Monday.

To receive goods Internationally in 4 days - [when you include both the day of order AND the day of delivery AND the fact that it was over the weekend] - I thought was amazing service!

[Update - since first using the drops Loki has had one extremely minor fit and it was a week longer between episodes.]

Action for Animals

If you live in America and are interested in 'Taking Action for Animals 2007!' then this is a timely reminder to say that the event is now less than three months away! And this year it will be taking place in Washington, D.C.

The 'Taking Action for Animals' weekend is designed to motivate, inspire, and teach advocates how to be a voice for animals.

If you want to arrange to attend then you'll find there are sessions and training workshops throughout the weekend, and then it is arranged that you will head to Capitol Hill on Monday for Lobby Day, where you will get experience advocating for animal protection legislation with others from your home state.

This year's conference is to have a special focus on taking action for farm animals, but will also cover other timely animal issues such as the pet food recall, and will feature hands-on training in lobbying, media relations, campaigns, and much more.

And always remember... and University studies back this up ... dog owners tend to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and fewer health problems - both minor and major. Whether it's due to the regular walks or the unconditional love, they don't appear to have any answer as yet!

Potty Training or House Training your Puppy

If you are having problems, or if you know of anyone who is having problems with house training / potty training their puppy or dog - I have two sources of help to offer.

Both resources can be accessed via our links in the left-hand side margin.

The one is to 'How to Housetrain any Dog' ... the other is a clipping in our 'Doggy Blog Clips' which was clipped yesterday [May 9th] on the subject of potty training.

What wasn't mentioned in the clip was how to remove the smell of the urine! If your pet has an accident and you clean it up... you also need to remove any residual smell, or your pet will assume that it is OK to go in that exact spot on other occasions.

Your puppy's sense of smell is FAR, FAR, superior to yours! So you need to eliminate all of the resultant smell from the area.

Blot up all the wet with paper towels, then clean the area with washing-up liquid and cool water on a cloth. Finally apply a mixture of equal parts of white distilled vinegar and cool water, blot, rinse and allow to dry naturally. [If possible test on a hidden area of carpet to check for any carpet discolouration.]

Creating a temporary puppy exclusion, or obstruction to the area, is advisable as an added precaution.

Puppies learn SO well, if trained properly!

Can I recommend that, if you want an inspiring story, you just click over to one of our other blogs?

Puppies can learn SO well - even those who have had a terrible past. Sad to say, puppies as young as four months, are often abandoned, ill-treated, or put out for re-homing.

[Our present dog is a rescue who was ill-treated from four to eleven months of age... before going to the RSPCA for a longish stay, then re-homed, then returned to the RSPCA who contacted Ridgeback Rescue, and a breeder took him in until he could be permanently re-homed. We had him some six weeks later as we were looking to re-home... he was somewhere around two and a half years old by that time!]

The inspiring story is about the dogs from the Dogs Trust who were featured on The UnderDog Show... some of them were mere pups, yet with proper training they learnt so quickly and so well - and became confident, affectionate, happy, and delightful pets.

Another thing I would recommend is the course by Dove Cresswell - her Dog Training Online has a freebie lesson which you must check out. It works so well, our dog picked it up amazingly quickly. Do try it!

How to help save wolves... after all they are just big dogs!

I am not going to post any Puppy Training Secrets today... I'm going to give this blog over to an e-mail I received today from the Defenders org... please read the quote from their e-mail below and then click over, with the link at the bottom, to their website...

Our Rhodesian Ridgeback... Loki

I just thought it was about time there was a photo of Loki added to my blog!

For those who haven't been reading this [or any of my other 'doggy' blogs] for any length of time... he is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and a rescue dog, from the RRWT [Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust - if you want further info about this, just let me know via a comment on the blog]... and he had lead a pretty dreadful life before he came to us.

Very sad to say, but, there are pups of 3 to 4 months who come up for re-homing by the RRWT... if you are an experienced owner, do consider these poor little mites... people still take on Ridgebacks who know nothing about them. You need a lot of energy to bring up a pup... I think it is more tiring than the first few months of a baby!

Mind you Loki has had a pretty rough trot since we have had him - in the health stakes. Some of his problems, at least, can be traced back to his past ill-treatment.

Along with a delicate stomach he has had to have treatment for cruciate ligament damage to both back legs, thyroid treatment and daily pills, arthritis too because of the leg problems... we are trying a magnetic collar to help with this. Also occasional epileptic fits... which we are hoping will subside without having to resort to drugs... we are again hoping the magnetic collar will help here, plus we are using some drops from PetAlive.com [see link in left-hand margin AND posts on 22nd and 23rd April, 2007] who are ace suppliers, but, more than that, they give wonderfully detailed explanations of problems, what to look for and when to get in touch with your vet... just brilliantly helpful information!

And you can add to the above list... treatment for teeth; and claws which have to be clipped at the vets, as unlike our previous Ridgeback which we had as a pup, he won't let us clip his claws... and they grow to a point at the front as his elbows are 'out' because he was chained as a pup from 4 to 11 months... before he was given over to the RSPCA.

He had got to the stage that he enjoyed all the attention in the waiting room at the vets... but would clamp himself to the floor as soon as the vet opened the door to the consulting room - it was just as if he were super-glued to the floor.

I had to stand over him and lift him up and walk him into the room still over him and holding him up! Everyone there found it most amusing!

Fingers crossed, at the moment, he is only visiting for claw clipping.

'Think Dog'

Training should be based on 'thinking dog' - too many humans fail to use their superior brain power - from the dog's point of view.

Once you can 'think dog' and anticipate a dog's reactions to any given set of circumstances - instead of expecting it to react as you [a human being] would - then you are well on the way to becoming an effective trainer.

Above all, you must realize that wild dogs are pack animals. Domesticated dogs inherit behaviour patterns which are geared for life in a pack. As a young pup, your pup will have played and fought with its litter mates in a way which simulates adult conditions.

Remember that your pup is a pack animal at heart... he or she will learn fast by repetition and example. At some stage he or she will almost certainly challenge for leadership. You MUST establish its place in the pack... that is below you, and other members of your family... as you and your extended family are now its 'pack'.

The Daffodil Principle...

No, this hasn't really got anything to do with puppies... directly!

But it does bring back to mind when we first got our puppy, Shimba, in April one year a long time back.

We had a large enclosed back garden with clumps of daffodils - in the lawn mostly, although there were some in the beds and borders. As soon as he was let out into the garden he ran round at full speed biting the heads off all the daffodils... no chance of catching him, so we just had 'bald' stalks! [Just a good job he didn't try eating them.]

Naming your puppy...

You may be lucky and have hit on just the right name for your new puppy before you have brought it home. On the other hand, there may be arguments within your family about what is a suitable name.

All trainers and professionals recommend that your puppy is named as soon as possible so that it can get used to its name and answer to it.

The Underdog Show... updated

Last nights show saw the number of dogs and celebrity handlers whittled down to four to compete in next weeks semi-final... and again the voting of the public to save Casper did not agree at all with the opinion of the judges.

But, part of the reason behind the show is to get the public to vote in order to donate some of the call cost to a charity... though in my opinion, and that of many other viewers, the belief is, that at least some of that charity donation should be to the Dogs Trust... or another animal welfare charity.

So Clive Anderson and Alfred were eliminated. And, happily, Alfred had already become firmly installed as part of Clive's family... so Alfred's tale [or tail!] had a 'happy ending'.

I don't know how long that web address will stay online, so I thought if you had full access to the entire address, should it be removed, you can try just part of the address and navigate to the information you require from the first part of the address!

There is a full profile of the dogs, or as full as they can get it... and details of their new lives... a rewarding read.

The show itself last night gave the dogs and handlers two different challenges... one an Agility, plus obedience and tricks type challenge, the other to put on a type of show or play, which involved the dogs in doing whatever tricks and behaviours which could be incorporated into the play, one even showed what flyball dogs have to do by opening a box.

Casper and Huey came well at the bottom in both disciplines... and Clive and Albert were joint second, but as mentioned above, it was Casper who went through.

The results show had a demonstration of freestyle dancing to music - which is what the finalists will be expected to do - the dog was called Tapper and was handled by Gina Pink who really made my day by choosing "Ain't that a kick in the head" sung by Dean Martin to do the routine to! Also featured this week were several Dogs Trust dogs who need a rescue home... they were promoted by the celebrity handlers.

What is just so upsetting is that so many of the dogs featured on the Underdog Show are so young, under 18 months for many... just puppies. What a terrible start in life... how can people be so cruel. Why don't they realise that a serious commitment must be made to care for the life and welfare of a defenceless animal?

So many sad stories in need of a happy ending!

I think we would be hard-pressed to find anyone who has not witnessed this peculiarity of domestic animals at one time or another. When it is our pet, however, it can cause us concern and, if we let our imaginations go unchecked, it can cause us alarm.

It has been my experience that on occasion, that alarm can lead to unnecessary expense as we panic and rush our best friend off to the nearest veterinarian, only to hear him tell us with a chuckle "he's okay, it's normal for him to eat grass. How embarrassing is that!

Why is it normal for our pets to consume grass? They all do it if they are allowed access to it. Are they not getting the right nourishment? Are they ill? These are all unsettling, but reasonable questions.

More unsettling is that invariably..."

Tip for UK readers...

Have you seen the delightful white lion cubs at the West Midlands Safari Park... they were featured on the TV yesterday... a real 'ahhhhhhhh' moment?

Just a quick post for all dog owners... West Midlands Safari Park do not allow dogs round the park. You can use their kennel facilities, water is available, but you'll have to take your own bowl, and any bedding, toys, or whatever you want... to keep your pet happy whilst it is in the kennel.

We won't be visiting as our rescue dog had unpleasant associations with kenneling... don't want to upset him.

So, if you are considering taking your pet anywhere for a day out, always check to see if dogs are allowed first. Better than getting there only to be disappointed!

Just a 'by the way'... the Cotswold Wildlife Park DO allow dogs, on leads, obviously!

The Animal Welfare Act UK... an introduction

Topical news... as from 6th April, 2007 the new Animal Welfare Act comes into force in the UK.

It is welcomed by the RSPCA. And it appears to require more responsibility from animal owners... let us hope it does what it is supposed to do. It is a sad world which actually NEEDS acts like this... sometimes you could despair when you hear so many tales of cruelty.

I won't launch into my feelings about the judiciary and sentencing policies... that's a whole different blog! [Non-existent, otherwise I'm sure it would create a great deal of trouble.]

Back to the Animal Welfare Act... if you want to check the details of the act out and get further information... here are two addresses which point - they should, at least, keep one of them current - to DEFRA.

Neutering

Neutering is basically removing the sex glands... it does involve anaesthesia, but is a relatively simple procedure... and has been done countless times.

If you are not going to breed from your dog, then most doggy people advise neutering.

Some males are problems in that they can be inclined to roam looking for bitches, and in other cases, it is recommended when dogs are overly dominant, or when they try to mount anything and anybody in sight!

With bitches, if you are not going to breed - and we all know how many poor unwanted dogs there are in shelters - having your pet spayed takes away the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. Don't let the fear of your female putting on weight put you off spaying... just keep your pet active.

Think of Agility or Flyball as a new interest for them. Heelwork to music, mentioned on the flyball and agility websites, could be an idea too - and we have links to a brilliant Agility Equipment supplier on the agility website! Plenty of walks and games are a good idea... and, if you haven't got the time for enough exercise, how about employing a professional dog walker?

Have a talk to your vet about the best time to get your pet neutered... they will give you all the information and reassurances you will require.

You are in control of your pets weight...

Please don't let your young pup put on too much weight... puppy fat!

Yes, they are appealing, but, no, they shouldn't be fed scraps and titbits from the table.

If they do get titbits make them WORK for them, as with obedience work. Otherwise left-over rice, gravy, cooked vegetables, chicken or lamb [be careful there are no bones] can be fed as part of their meals... not as an extra.

My take on bones is... don't give them ANY. Yes, some people say they can have marrow bones or large bones... but if your pup or dog should loosen a small fragment and it got stuck in its throat... you would never forgive yourself. Best not to risk it.

Please see my cautions on toys which are too small and can get stuck in the throat, and sticks, on another post, maybe even on one of my other doggy blogs... check them all out if you want to read it - though it was a horror story, and I'm afraid I underestimated the size of the stick - it was nearer 12 inches [grudgingly, I'll add that that is around 30 cm].

Giving the correct commands... the difference between 'down' and 'off'

The first and most vital thing you must do is decide if DOWN is the word you want to use to get your puppy to go 'down'.

There is a possibility of confusion if you aren't careful in choosing a different word for if you want your pet to get off something... for example, if your pet has got up on a chair or sofa and you want it to get down... it will be no good saying 'down', or it will do as it is told, and lie down!

[So if you want down to mean 'down', you will have to use 'off' for getting off something.]

Now on to teaching your pet to 'down'... and once your puppy will happily do this, you will be on the way to curing an overly dominant pup [in the down position your puppy will feel at its most vulnerable].

Treats in the form of your pups favorite titbit are a good lure to get your pet into the 'down' position. Hold the titbit in front of your puppy, and lower your hand to the floor whilst saying down - don't release the titbit until your pet is down. Give the titbit and plenty of praise when the required position has been attained!

Sitting on the floor, making your leg into a ^ sort of shape [with your knee as the top of the triangle]... then using your opposite hand to encourage your puppy through the triangle with a titbit, is a way of getting them into a down position, if they are amenable to that, or can treat it as a type of game! Give plenty of praise if you are successful.

"What dog owners can tell scientists about the nature of the universe

Scientists all over the world are searching for the missing matter in the universe. They know how much there should be from observing they way the galaxies move, but they just can't find it. You may hear this missing stuff called "dark matter", but that is just their way of saying they can't see it, and don't really know where it is.

They have carefully counted all they matter they can find, every galaxy, every plasma could, every atom, every photon of light. (They have the time; they don't get invited to many parties.) Then they will explain, at great length and in great detail, how there just isn't enough matter to match the observed behaviour of the universe. (This is why they don't get invited to many parties.)

I can tell them where the missing matter is. It's dog hair. Have you ever heard a scientist say that they included dog hair when totting up the contents of the universe? No. And what they seem to have missed is that there is an almost inexhaustible supply of it.

Our house is just full of dog hair. It's everywhere. Clean the house of dog hair from top to bottom; not just the ones on the floor, including those under the sofa and the sideboard, and the ones that cling to the upholstery, both the top and the under sides of the seat cushions. Eradicate even the ones that line the inside of your shoe, the couple that are always on the lowest shelf of the fridge, and the really irritating ones that cling to any surface with static such as TV screens. Do all this, and for just a few minutes your house will be hair free, but very soon there will be as much as there ever was, as the natural balance of the universe is restored.

Were dog hair constructed of normal matter, then of course we would just be converting matter in one form (dog food) into matter of another form (dog hair). But this is not ordinary matter. It defies our current understanding of the Law of Conservation of Mass, as the amount of hair produced will always be vastly more than the quantity of food provided, without any risk of the dog becoming bald.

So this is my call to the scientists to lay down their telescopes when looking for the missing mass in the universe, and pick up the vacuum cleaner. (I bet their wives would agree.)

This is not the only area where we dog owners seem to know more than the scientists. For example, any scientist who proclaims with absolute authority that there is no such thing as perpetual motion has never seen a Labrador’s tail.

Similarly, they will tell us that faster than light travel is plainly impossible. I'm afraid that have to inform them that this is simply not true.

Regardless of how far away our dog is when we open his food container, he is suddenly there, waiting attentively at his bowl, without ever having been visible in any of the intervening space. Perhaps I imagine it, but just occasionally I might catch, out of the corner of my eye, a faint blue flash, perhaps from what scientists call 'Doppler shift' where an object is travelling so fast it is actually catching up with it's own light waves, causing it to change colour, the same way an ambulance siren changes it's tone as it passes you.

Sometimes, scientists are on the right track, but they haven't quite got there yet. Take quantum tunnelling. They theorise that because, due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, atoms don't exist in a particular place, they have a "probability cloud", an area of places the might be. If the cloud happens to cross a barrier, the atom can actually travel though an impenetrable barrier.

This is their theory, and they are looking for ways to prove it experimentally. I can give them one. Take an empty jar. Put a lid on it and seal it tightly, so not even air can get in or out. Now take this jar and put it in a house where a dog lives. Leave it alone for a day. When you come back, you will find it contains a few dog hairs. That's just they way the universe is. And it is a clear indication that quantum tunnelling is a real effect.

These are just a few of the things that we dog owners can contribute to the world of science. Perhaps next time I'll tell you what we can tell the businessmen of the world; perhaps how "Return On Investment" is watching your puppy grow up."
